Devil You Know- The Beauty of Destruction Review

After two years, Howard Jones is back in the metalcore scene following his departure from Killswitch Engage. His new band(aggressively named Devil You Know) consists of Francesco Arusato(formerly of All Shall Perish) and John Sankey(formerly of Fear Factory). Devil You Know can be easily be referred to as a metal “supergroup”, and there was quite a lot of hype surrounding The Beauty of Destruction prior to its release. Unfortunately, the album falls short of my anticipation, as I feel that the band could have done so much more with their talents instead of simply adhering to one general formula.

My biggest problem with The Beauty of Destruction is that it does nothing to separate itself from the typical metalcore standard. The majority of the tracks are generic and very underdeveloped. It is obvious to me that the band has chosen to play it safe and throw out any idea of experimentation. Aside from a few standout tracks, songs follow the same structure of quick vocal variations and identical guitar riffs. To give the band some credit, each member performed up to par with how they performed with their prior bands: Howard’s vocals sound fantastic and the instrumentals are very well done. Unfortunately, most tracks sound exactly the same! All the clean choruses by Howard sound identical, and everything is incredibly predictable. When I listened to this release, I knew exactly when Howard is going to switch from cleans to screams (vice versa) and when a breakdown is coming in. The Beauty of Destruction shows much of the melodic sides of each band member, as many tracks are done with more of a ballad-feel in mind. I guess this is a smart way to go, as the band will appeal to a much wider audience-probably fans of hard rock and post-hardcore. With the soft melodic choruses integrated with some heaviness here and there, it honestly reminds me a little too much of We Came as Romans for my liking. One aspect of the album I did enjoy was the guitar playing, as it features some fantastic guitar shredding and melodic riffs. The occasional solo work is a nice relief from the mundaneness that is The Beauty of Destruction. There are still several standout tracks on this album, including “A New Beginning”, “Seven Years Alone”, “A Mind Insane”, “Shut It Down”, and “As Bright as the Darkness”. These are the tracks that have more of a punch to them, that truly have their unique identity. Besides these tracks, I feel that the band did not put quite the effort into the majority of the album, and those standout tracks I mentioned simply cannot make up for it.

Overall, I am very disappointed with The Beauty of Destruction. Because of how similar and lackluster everything sounds, this album fails to spark my interest. I feel bad using the term “lackluster” and “uninspired” after knowing what Howard had gone through, but that is unfortunately how I feel that this record sounds after multiple auditions. I am a huge fan of All Shall Perish and Killswitch Engage, and it truly is too bad, as there is more disaster than beauty in this album. Seriously though, don’t you guys think “All Shall Perish through Killswitch” is much cooler of a name than The Beauty of Destruction? Anyways, thanks for reading LegionCore, and I hope to review the upcoming Chelesa Grin album soon!
