Hello guys, and welcome to LegionCore. This is my first ever review, and this is also my first album by Within the Ruins, so please give me some feedback about how I could improve! Without further delay, let’s get to the review.
Elite is the third full length album released by Within the Ruins, and it succeeds the two prior albums, Creature and Invade. It was released on 2/26/2013, via E1 Music. After listening to the album for a few times, I must say that I am very impressed with the album overall, especially the technicality and the difficult instrumentals this band is able to perform. The lead single, Feeding Frenzy, is a great example of what to expect, as it shows off the prominent guitar harmonics and energetic vocals this band is able to produce. The guitars are a little reminiscent of the ones used in Born of Osiris’s Discovery album, and it truly separates Within the Ruins from other mediocre deathcore bands out there. Many deathcore bands rely too much on just breakdowns, and chugging simple riffs and power chords over and over, but not Within the Ruins. All of the songs feature great, technical guitar riffs while still maintaining catchiness to them. The vocals and the instrumentals go smoothly together, and none of the breakdowns seem out of place or unnecessary/excessive. I can say that the production on this album is very well done overall.
Lyrical content on this song is decent, but nothing too extraordinary or mind-blowing. Like a lot of other deathcore bands, they make various allusions to religion, such as songs like New Holy War, Absolute Hell, I, Blashpheme, etc.(This is my interpretation.) My favorite lyric is from New Holy War. “Now prepare for the New Holy War. Weaponize and keep your god in mind.As you prepare to slay your fellow man. It is all glorified in his name.” Very powerful lyrics like convey an important message. With the title being “New Holy War”, it gives a reference to The Crusades or just any wars over religion, and the belief that fighting, not peace will bring people to heaven’s gates. Other songs that are my favorites are Solace, Ataxia II, and the lead single, Feeding Frenzy. Ataxia II is especially great because it is an instrumental song that truly shows off how talented the guitarists in the band are. Along with the technicality portrayed, the songs are tuned and played in such a unique fashion separates themselves from other deathcore bands. Even if you are not interested in deathcore, I still highly recommend you to at least check out this song, because the high level of guitar work is quite amazing.

One aspect that I felt that the band could have done better was to implement different structures and fresh guitar riffs toward the latter of the album. I feel that this album got a bit repetitive in the end, and it would have been nice for the band to try out something new, or something they have not done yet in this album. I also didn’t enjoy the final track “Dreamland”. It is an instrumental with certain recorded voice playing in the background. I thought that the instrumentals on that track were recycled and what we’ve been hearing throughout the entire album. I don’t think that it leaves a memorable end to the album, and I felt like the band could have ended the album on a stronger note.
Overall, I truly enjoyed this album, both as a deathcore fan and as a metal fan. I would say that this album is a must have if you’re really into deathcore, especially cause there hasn’t been a plethora of albums in the genre released in 2013. This album is a solid piece of work, and I would highly recommend purchasing it. Memorability wise, I wouldn’t say that it is very memorable because of its repetitive nature (esp. towards the end), but I think that it would still be cool to listen to from time to time. If you’re still reading at this point, I thank you very much. This has been my first ever review of a metal album, so I apologize if I get some stuff wrong or if I don’t seem amazingly professional. Other than that, please leave any comments or suggestions about what you thought of this album, and what you thought of my review. Thank you again.
