Over this past week, two prominent bands have announced their breakup: deathcore outfit As Blood Runs Black, and electronic post-hardcore outfit Abandon All Ships. Let’s talk about As Blood Runs Black first.
ABRB band entered the deathcore scene in 2006, with the release of their debut album, Allegiance. The album was an amazing piece of work, filled with powerful guitar riffs, unbelievable double bass drumming, and an extremely catchy vocal performance. Allegiance is one of the strongest deathcore debut performances I’ve ever heard, a close second to Neverbloom by Make Them Suffer. However, things didn’t all go as planned for this band despite the success of their debut. They would later go through numerous lineup changes (ten former members), and it would be five years until the release of their second album, Instinct. By this time, the epic lineup that brought us Allegiance was all but gone except for their drummer, Hector “Lech” De Santiago. Of course, with the absence of all but one of the Allegiance members, Instinct sounded fundamentally different from their debut, and failed to live up to the hype. Additionally, most fans of Allegiance had already forgotten about ABRB, and through the rise of Veil of Maya, Born of Osiris, Make Them Suffer, and other epic deathcore outfits, ABRB lost their prominence in the deathcore market. The band later decided to reach out and ask their fans to fund their third album, and accumulated about $25,000. However, with no given release date and absolute silence regarding their new album, the band has once again left their fans hanging. On 8/12/2014, Hector De Santiago released this statement: “After YEARS of uphill battles, dealing with legalities, politics, getting robbed blind by our ex label, left for dead and getting shelved by the industry… I’m here to to say all things come to an end. As Blood Runs Black was born in my parents basement and has been the biggest part of my life since 2003. She was my daughter. We had a dream and we ran as far as we could with it. Forever in debt and grateful for the band of brothers (past and present) who risked their lives, contributed, and truly risked it all for the love and passion of music. We literally gave and lost everything in this storm. THANKS to all who supported and gave us a chance to share our music with you guys. We were all broken kids and you guys (and gals) gave us a chance to live. THANK YOU!!” People who actually funded the album were, not surprisingly, irate about this whole ordeal. It looks as if the band has chosen to take the funding, go on with their lives, and pretty much give a big middle finger to their fan base. However, the story doesn’t end here. On 8/16, the band released this statement to fans who contributed to the fund: “There have been a lot of questions recently regarding the future of the band and the release of Ground Zero. We wanted to reach out and let you know that Ground Zero will be coming out in the fall and you will be receiving your Indiegogo contributor perks before the public release of the album. We are putting together a worldwide tour schedule through next summer to support the album starting this fall in North America. Let us know where you want to see us play and we’ll do our best to make it happen.
More detailed information is coming soon. Thank you for bearing with us through this challenging time, your support is what keeps us going.” Is As Blood Runs Black breaking up or not? As of now, it’s impossible to tell. This could be a publicity stunt to hype up their new album, or it could’ve been an irrational decision made by the band members at the spur of the moment. I will keep you guys updated with news regarding this situation.
Now on to Abandon All Ships. These guys hail from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and can be mistaken as members of One Direction or any other pop group. They attempt to fuse electronic and hip hop elements into their music through the use of autotune and electronic layering. I’m not a big fan of their music. It’s not necessarily the autotune that turns me off, but the awful screaming and the simplistic power chords that make them fairly unpopular among metal fans. They’ve never been relevant in metal, and sadly, many people are going to be cheering at their breakup.
Overall, I’m not too dejected over AAS’s breakup, and I’m still waiting on more news from ABRB. Stay tuned to LegionCore, as I’ll be posting more up to date news and info regarding this situation. I’ll also be reviewing the latest album by Darkest Hour, Darkest Hour, sometime soon. Thanks for reading LegionCore, and check back soon for more metal news and reviews.
