Whitechapel has released their brand new album, entitled Our Endless War. For those who don’t know, Whitechapel hails from Knoxville, Tennessee, and is one of the most famous deathcore bands in the world. Our Endless War is Whitechapel’s fifth studio album, and has received much attention and praise within the metal community since its release on 4/29/2014 via Metal Blade Records. I believe that this is Whitechapel’s best album to date, exceeding both Whitechapel and This is Exile, as it portrays the evolution of the band and their hard work through the years.
The first time I listened to this album, I found that it retains much of the sound from their prior self-titled record, Whitechapel. Phil’s growls maintain the same depth and intensity as before, and the riffs are more hard-hitting than ever. However, one notable aspect about this album that shines compared to previous releases is that the guitar playing on it is very rhythmic and groovy. They complement Phil’s vocals extremely well, and can be fast or slow depending on the different tones of each track. I believe that the key part about the rhythm guitar that makes it flow so well is that it doesn’t try to do too much, but stays true to the melody. This way, songs are able to seem a lot more cohesive and well-structured compared to something like The Somatic Defilement. This holds true on the drums as well, leading to a terrific combination of the instrumentals and the vocals. The groovy riffs are able to produce some awesome head-banging moments, and the breakdowns always feel raw and non-repetitive. Phil implements some gutturals and fast growls on this record, and although few and in between, they are able to crank up the intensity of the music. Despite the fact that these vocal styles distort Phil’s usual clear enunciation, they are integrated well into the music and don’t sound out of place. This album manages to stay fresh and interesting through roughly 39 minutes of play, as the different grooves and tempo changes provide each track with a different taste. Some of my favorites off Our Endless War include “Our Endless War”, “The Saw is the Law”, “Worship the Digital Age”, and “Diggs Road”. From the two bonus tracks on this album, I enjoyed “A Process So Familiar”, as it features some amazing solo guitar work less seen on the release.
Lyrical content on Our Endless War is awesome, with topics ranging from political uprising, mental illness, Phil’s childhood, and the state of Tennessee. I have always loved Whitechapel’s lyrics, and this album is no different. They are quite creative and stray from the generic garbage that a lot of bands in this genre tend to adhere to. “From Worship the Digital Age”, “They dine at night on western desert sands, And drink the blood of children’s severed heads, All for praise, the fortune and the fame, We sold our souls to worship the digital age” Phil’s lyrics are meaningful and thought-provoking. Phil is true to himself with his writings, and they come from both his experiences and his beliefs. I would highly recommend fans of this band to give them a read.
