Hello readers, welcome to LegionCore again! I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in while, because I’ve just been really busy with school life and personal life. However, in 2014, I hope to bring you guys even more great reviews and metal content. To start the year off, I have put together my top 10 list of best metal albums of the year, and I hope that you can find something that you haven’t heard of before and enjoy it. I mean, that’s what reviewing music is all about in the end. If you like my list, be sure to share it with your friends, as I hope that they too can discover great music through LegionCore. Without further delays, let’s see the best that 2013 had to offer for us. Have a great year, and I can’t wait to listen and review what 2014 will bring for us. Enjoy!
10. Bleed From Within-Uprising
Uprising by Bleed From Within begins our list, settling at the #10 spot. This young deathcore band has much talent to bring to the table, and this album really sets BFW from other deathcore bands. The guitar work on this album is terrific, and the band was able to keep the intensity up throughout the entire album. However, this album suffers from the repetitive aspect, and many tracks simply sound too familiar to each other that it takes several listens to truly grasp the feel of each song. If they can experiment a little bit more and not repeatedly use the same formula for each song, they have the potential to create some even better music.
9. Within the Ruins- Elite
Innovative, technical deathcore with a certain catchiness to it. Elite by Within the Ruins is a great addition to their discography, as it once again highlighted how talented and special this band is. The guitar work on this album is absolutely phenomenal, and many standout tracks like “Feeding Frenzy”, “New Holy War”, “Ataxia II”, and “Solace” make it a lot of fun to listen to.
8. I See Stars- New Demons
I See Stars released a new album only one and half years after their release of Digital Renegade, and this album just blows Digital Renegade out of the water. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Digital Renegade is a pretty good album as well, but New Demons shows off just how much the band has learned and improved over the years. New Demons blends electronic and metal together in a way that both genres seem to be flowing with each other instead of against each other. The electronic aspects of the music feel like they are meant to be there, and not put there just to add catchiness or variety to the music. “Ten Thousand Feet,” “New Demons”, “Violent Bounce”, and “Murder Mitten” are just some of the few great tracks off this album, and I would highly recommend this album for anyone interested in exploring a different style of music, and I hope that I See Stars can finally get the international exposure they deserve as a result of this great work.
7. Trivium- Vengeance Falls
Trivium has been and always will be one of my favorite bands of all time, and it is disappointing to see their album only fall at #7. I think that this album is still a fantastic album, but I just feel like something from the old Trivium is not there anymore. The intensity on this album is definitely toned down, and Matt Heafy rarely uses screamed vocals throughout the record. Songs like “Strife” and “Brave this Storm” are tremendous and catchy, but I just miss the old Trivium with songs like “Pull Harder on the Strings of Your Martyr” or “Down from the Sky”, when they could just completely blow my mind with the insanity of the tracks. With all that said, this is still a very solid release, and I guess my expectations for them were just a little too high this time.
6. Rings of Saturn- Dingir
This album is absolutely mindblowing. Dingir is the second release by technical death metal band Rings of Saturn, and it definitely does not disappoint on the technical side. The guitar riffs and harmonics are played at insane speeds and the music is like nothing I have ever heard of before. However, you really need to be in the mood for Dingir to actually enjoy it though, as the weird harsh vocals and intense instrumentals are hard to take in in one sitting.

5. Dream Theater- Dream Theater
Dream Theater has done it again. These gods of progressive metal never fail to disappoint, and their self-titled album is yet another incredible masterpiece. From “False Awakening Suite” to “Illumination Theory”, this album never has a dull moment. The production on Dream Theater is beyond amazing, and this album just gets better every time you listen to it. “The Enemy Inside” has quickly become one of my favorite songs of all time, and I would highly recommend this to anybody, whether you’re into metal or not.
4. Bring Me the Horizon- Sempiternal
Bring Me the Horizon is usually a very controversial band in the metal community, with some people absolutely adoring everything they produce, to people who cannot stand the thought of their music. However, Sempiternal brought us a different and more mature sound from BMTH compared to their older records, and this album has been embraced by much more metal fans. Everything about them got better, such as songwriting, musicianship, and production. Sempiternal is much more melodic compared to BMTH’s older stuff, and Ollie’s vocals have improved tremendously. Even if you’ve hate BMTH in the past or you’ve never listened to them before, I would highly recommend checking this album out, as it contains tons of great tracks, such as “Sleepwalking” and “Shadow Moses”.
3. Born of Osiris- Tomorrow We Die Alive
Although I believe that Born of Osiris did not live up to the hype that was The Discovery, I still think that Tomorrow We Die Alive is an awesome album, and a worthy addition to the BoO discography. We get what we have come to expect from BoO, including the technical and progressive guitar tones to the awesome lyrics about the unknown. We can definitely feel the absence of Jason Richardson as lead guitarist, as the guitars did get less melodic and technical, and replaced with more chugging and breakdowns. However, production work on this album is phenomenal, as the electronics, keyboards, and synth still give off the progressive vibe we got in The Discovery. All fans of metal should check this album out, and standout tracks such as “Machine”, “Mindful”, and “Vengeance” make this an epic album.
2. Soilwork- The Living Infinite
Soilwork has taken a risk in The Living Infinite, and released a two disc set containing twenty tracks. The risk has totally paid off, as these twenty tracks are a purely insane, melodic death metal package. From songs such as “Spectrum of Eternity”, “This Momentary Bliss”, “The Living Infinite”, and “Long Live the Misanthrope”, there was never a boring or wasted moment on this album. The Living Infinite is 100% worth getting, as the musicianship on this album is absolutely incredible. Soilwork has come a long way, and they have stayed consistent and true to their roots, and The Living Infinite is a perfect example of that.
- Killswitch Engage- Killswitch Engage
Killswitch Engage by Killswitch Engage is undisputedly my favorite album of 2013. I was worried at first when Jesse Leech replaced Howard Jones as lead vocalist, but all my fears were put to rest immediately when the lead single, “In Due Time” came out. Knowing what Jesse has gone through, some of these lyrics off this album brought tears to my eyes. “All in Due time, see the world through different eyes. All in due time, shadows will give way to light.” This album is nothing but a masterpiece, with heart wrenching solos and incredible energy. Since metalcore is my favorite metal subgenre, this album was everything I could ever ask for. Absolutely buy it, because you just can’t be disappointed. Killswitch Engage is great whether you’re in a good or bad mood, and the musicianship portrayed by these guys is purely mindblowing. The production on this album is amazing as well, and I honestly don’t have anything bad to say about this release. Such a talented group of guys, and truly deserving to win LegionCore’s 2013 metal album of the year!
