Blessthefall-Hollow Bodies Review

Hollow Bodies is the fourth release from the famous post-hardcore band Blessthefall. It was first released on 8/20/2013, via Fearless records. The band continues to feature Beau Boken as its leads singer, and the lineup hasn’t changed much since the release of Awakening. This was a highly anticipated release, as Blessthefall has established quite a large fanbase in the metalcore/post-hardcore scene. Hollow Bodies definitely does not disappoint, as it is a solid album with many great moments, and is an epic addition to the Blessthefall discography.

What made this album so great was that Blessthefall was able to incorporate both soft and hard elements of post-hardcore, and is able to find a good balance between them. One thing I noticed about the album immediately after the first listen was that the transitions between the screamed vocals and the clean vocals are very well done, and the tracks are able to flow smoothly as a result. Production work on this album is fantastic, as the electronics and synth are executed very well, and the band is able to use them to alter and transition the mood of the tracks. Going track by track, this album does not get tiring because it isn’t repetitive unlike many of the post-hardcore/metalcore albums these days. All the songs are diverse, and each song has it signature and unique feel to it. Both Beau and Jared did very well in the vocals department, and Jared’s screamed vocals complements Beau’s clean vocals well, and it creates a nice balance for the music. Guitar work on this album is above average, as there are some cool riffings integrated into the tracks. Breakdowns are well-timed, and they come and go when they’re supposed to. Whenever you feel like the track is getting too slow, the heavy chugging breakdowns come in and lift the mood and quicken the pace of the tracks. There aren’t too many breakdowns to the point that you feel tired of listening to them, and they come in a timely manner that is quite enjoyable and exciting to listen to. My favorite tracks on the album are “You Wear a Crown But You’re No King”, “Déjà vu”, “See You on the Outside”, “Standing on the Ashes”, and “The Sound of Starting Over”. If I really had to choose a favorite in between these songs, I would probably pick “Standing on the Ashes”, as it has a tremendous chorus balanced with heavy screaming vocals and epic guitar work. The riffing on this song is very catchy; the song is able to stand out from other tracks on the album. Even if you’re not a fan of Blessthefall, “Standing on the Ashes” is one worthy of checking out. Artwork on the album is awesome as well, and it depicts a face that’s peeling off and covered in something red (could be blood.) I am not sure what it is supposed to symbolize, so if you guys know, please leave a comment down below!

Overall, Hollow Bodies delivers because it is able to balance heaviness and catchiness. The choruses are very well done and the transitions into screamed vocals and breakdowns are smooth and complementary. Great production work on this album is able to make it sound even more upbeat and spice up the songs as well. Although lyrical work on this album is a bit generic and bland, it really isn’t that bad considering other lyrics that we are getting from bands in this similar genre. This is a terrific album for fans of both post-hardcore and metalcore, and I would highly suggest checking it out if you are into those particular genres.
