Bleed From Within-Uprising Album Review

“Uprising” is third album released by the young British deathcore band Bleed From Within, and it succeeds their two prior albums, “Humanity” and “Empire”. The band was created in 2005, and was first able to experience international exposure when they toured with Megadeth back in June of 2013. “Uprising” was released in March of this year via Century Media Records, and has been praised by many metal fans and reviewers. I believe this record to be a solid deathcore release, and, although not without flaws, displays a lot of talent and intensity that Bleed From Within is able to perform.

I will begin this review with what I liked about “Uprising”, and following up with what I think could’ve been done better. Aspects of the album that I enjoyed were the vocals and the intensity. All of “Uprising” is done using screamed vocals, and Scott Kennedy did a terrific job on them. He is able to mix in both highs and lows, and stay consistent throughout the entire record. His growls have a uniqueness to them that makes “Uprising” fresh and enjoyable to listen to. The guitars and drums are able to keep up with the energy of the vocals, and put together an intense package that packs a punch. Work on the lead guitar is quite good, and some of the melodies played in the background were unique and done skillfully. However, this contributes to my first gripe about this album: the lead guitar is way too compressed by other instrumentals for the listener to truly enjoy and comprehend. Very often, it is buried beneath the heavy chugging of the rhythm guitar, and makes it hard to hear. The lead guitar sounds excellent when, on rare occasions, it has time to shine on this own. The guitar work in Strive was outstanding and catchy, and both the solo in Leech and Escape Yourself are brilliant. There definitely should have been more of those moments in the album, and the lead guitar should have had more spotlight than the rhythm guitar. Another downside to this album is that it can get very repetitive sometimes, due to the similarity of the songs structures on every single song. Song structures are close to identical, and the heavy chugging can also get tiresome to listen to. Some of the melodic lead guitar work also feels recycled and very similar sometimes. Bleed From Within could definitely have experimented more with this album, and mixed things up a bit more to keep things fresh and interesting.

Lyrics on this album are pretty typical of deathcore music. A lot of anger, sadness, and negativity are portrayed throughout. However, certain hopefulness and aspirations are also present in “Uprising”. The most memorable album was when Scott screams “I clench my fist around your eyes, to finally realize, the dream is alive, the dream is alive!” in I Am Oblivion. Although the lyrics lean towards the generic side, a lot of emotions are still being portrayed, and you can feel that behind the energy of Scott’s screams.

Overall, I feel that Bleed From Within possesses a great deal of talent, and they could be on the brink of creating something amazing. If Scott is able to add a bit more variety to his vocals, and the lead guitar melodies get more time to shine, their next release could potentially be incredible. As for “Uprising”, I have to say that it still decent, but just lacking a little bit here and there. Many listens are required to truly get a feel for the tracks, because sometimes, they just sound too similar. My favorites on the album are Colony, Strive, I am Oblivion, Uprising, and Leech. If you’re a fan of deathcore, I would say go ahead and get this release, as it does deliver the heavy chugging and impactful energy along with some very talented guitar playing. If you’re not a fan of deathcore, but like other styles of metal, you might want to audition the album a few times before buying, to see if it really suits your taste. That’s about all I have to say regarding “Uprising”, thank you again for reading my review.
